PRSI Payslip Guide Reviewed 26 July 2026

PRSI on Your Payslip: EE, ER, Class and Weeks

Read PRSI EE and ER on an Irish payslip, understand class, subclass and contribution weeks, and troubleshoot an unexpected deduction.

Quick answer

  • EE usually means the employee share deducted from pay; ER means the separate employer share.
  • A code such as A1 contains the broad class and the subclass used for that pay period.
  • PRSI weeks show the insurable weeks reported for the period, not a year-to-date contribution total.
  • Start a suspected error with payroll, but use DSP for contribution-record, class-scope or formal refund issues.

How to read the main PRSI payslip fields

Payslip label Meaning Does it reduce net pay?
PRSI EE / Employee PRSI The employee share for the pay period Yes
PRSI ER / Employer PRSI The employer share paid on top of salary No
Class or subclass The contribution category used for the period It determines treatment
PRSI weeks The insurable weeks reported with the payroll submission No direct deduction
PRSI gross / reckonable pay The pay base used for the contribution It drives the calculation

Why monthly payroll can show four or five PRSI weeks

Contribution weeks are reported for the pay period. Weekly payroll normally reports one week and fortnightly payroll two. Monthly payroll can report four or five weeks depending on the payroll calendar. This is not a year-to-date count and should not simply show “12” because it is the twelfth month.

An incorrect weeks entry can affect the contribution record. Revenue instructs employers to correct payroll submission errors as soon as they are identified.

Bonus, overtime, arrears and once-off payslips

Additional reckonable pay can move weekly-equivalent earnings into another subclass or employer band. Payroll systems can combine a once-off payslip with the regular payslip in the same pay period before calculating PRSI.

Compare total PRSI gross for the period, not just base salary. A higher deduction after a bonus can be correct even if the person’s annual job title and PRSI class did not change.

Evidence to keep before raising a query

  • The payslip with employee PRSI, employer PRSI, class and PRSI weeks.
  • The previous payslip for comparison.
  • Gross salary, overtime, bonus, arrears and benefit details.
  • Employment start or end dates and any change in status.
  • Payroll’s written explanation or correction reference.
  • A Contribution Statement where the concern is the long-term record.

Frequently asked questions

What does PRSI EE mean?

EE means the employee share of PRSI. It is deducted from gross pay and reduces take-home pay.

What does PRSI ER mean?

ER means the employer share. It is paid on top of salary and is not taken from employee net pay.

What does A1 mean on a payslip?

A1 is a subclass within Class A, generally associated with earnings above the relevant employer-band cut-off.

Why does my monthly payslip show five PRSI weeks?

Monthly payroll can contain four or five contribution weeks depending on the payroll calendar.

Why is my PRSI so high after a bonus?

Bonus or once-off pay can increase reckonable pay and change the subclass or credit treatment for that period.

Why is no PRSI deducted?

The employee share may be nil because of the band or class, but check the class, employer share and contribution record.

Who fixes the wrong PRSI class?

Start with payroll. If the employment status or insurability is disputed, DSP Scope Section is the appropriate authority.

Can a calculator prove payroll is wrong?

No. It can identify a difference, but payroll and official DSP records determine the actual treatment.
