Vehicle Details

Most imported cars use Category A. Vans, motor caravans and motorcycles use different rules.
Where do I find the OMSP?

Use Revenue's official VRT enquiry where the exact model is listed. OMSP is Revenue's Irish open-market value, not necessarily the invoice price. If the vehicle is not listed, research comparable Irish vehicles and treat the result as provisional.

Revenue uses conversion formulae for some older NEDC values.
Where do I find CO₂?

Check the Certificate of Conformity or foreign registration document. Select NEDC only when the document provides an older NEDC figure that Revenue converts for banding.

UK documents may show g/km. Revenue converts grams to milligrams.
Where do I find NOx?

Revenue accepts satisfactory evidence such as a Certificate of Conformity or qualifying registration documentation. A figure in g/km is 1,000 times smaller than the same figure in mg/km: 0.008g/km equals 8mg/km.

Important estimate note This calculator does not look up a registration number or Revenue statistical code. It uses the OMSP, CO₂ and NOx values you enter, so the final Revenue/NCTS figure can differ. Use the official lookup route below when you need Revenue's current model valuation.

How this VRT estimate is calculated

This calculator estimates 2026 Vehicle Registration Tax in Ireland from the vehicle category, OMSP, CO₂ emissions, NOx emissions, fuel type, and motorcycle details where relevant.

Published by Irish Calculators. Rates, rules and assumptions are maintained against the official sources linked below.

  1. For Category A cars, the calculator applies the Revenue CO₂ band to the OMSP to estimate the CO₂ component.
  2. It then estimates the NOx charge from the NOx figure entered, or applies the maximum diesel/non-diesel estimate if no NOx evidence is selected.
  3. For qualifying battery electric vehicles registered by 31 December 2026, the calculator applies the tapered EV relief estimate where applicable.
  4. Category B, Category C, and motorcycle estimates use their own simplified Revenue rule paths, including motorcycle age reduction.
  5. The result remains a planning estimate only because Revenue confirms final VRT at registration using exact vehicle details and OMSP.

About This VRT Calculator Ireland

This free VRT calculator Ireland page helps you estimate Vehicle Registration Tax before registering or importing a vehicle. It is designed for manual planning where you know, or can estimate, OMSP, CO₂ emissions and NOx emissions.

What it estimates. For Category A cars, the calculator estimates the CO₂ VRT component, the NOx component, electric vehicle relief where relevant, and the total VRT payable. It also includes simplified Category B, Category C and motorcycle estimates.

What it does not do. It does not search by registration number, statistical code, vehicle database, exact Revenue OMSP valuation, chargeable extras, NCTS inspection outcome, or special manual valuation cases. The official Revenue VRT calculator and NCTS process decide the final amount.

Useful internal tools. If you are budgeting for an imported car, you may also want to use the Loan Repayment Calculator, Savings Goal Calculator, and VAT Calculator.

This VRT calculator is for illustration only and does not constitute tax, legal, vehicle import, or financial advice.

Which VRT calculator should you use?

Choose the route that matches the information you have. Irish Calculators gives a transparent manual estimate; Revenue provides the official vehicle-model and statistical-code service.

Try common VRT calculation examples

Each button loads the stated assumptions into the calculator. Revenue confirms the final amount at registration.

Category A petrol

€20,000 OMSP · 130g CO₂ · 50mg NOx

€3,500 CO₂ component plus €350 NOx gives an estimated VRT of €3,850.

Category A diesel

€12,000 OMSP · 130g CO₂ · NOx missing

€2,100 CO₂ component plus the €4,850 missing-evidence maximum gives €6,950.

Battery electric car

€40,000 OMSP · 0g CO₂

€2,800 base VRT is fully offset by the qualifying 2026 EV relief, giving an estimate of €0.

Category M motorcycle

650cc · first registered July 2018

The base charge is €1,000 before Revenue's age reduction. The live result uses today's date to select the correct reduction band.

How This Calculator Works

1
Choose the VRT category that best matches the vehicle: Category A car, Category B commercial or motor caravan, Category C fixed-rate vehicle, or Category M motorcycle.
2
For cars and small commercial vehicles, enter the OMSP and CO₂ figure. If your document shows NEDC, the calculator converts it to a WLTP-style figure using Revenue formulae.
3
For Category A cars, enter the NOx figure where available. If no NOx figure is available, the calculator applies the maximum diesel or non-diesel NOx estimate.
4
The calculator applies the CO₂ rate band, adds NOx where relevant, and subtracts 2026 EV relief for qualifying battery electric vehicles registered by the current deadline.
5
Use the result as a planning estimate only. Revenue confirms final VRT when the vehicle is presented for registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VRT in Ireland?
VRT means Vehicle Registration Tax. It is generally payable when a vehicle is first registered in Ireland, including many imported vehicles.
How much is VRT in Ireland?
There is no single flat amount. For most Category A cars, VRT is based on Revenue’s OMSP and the applicable CO₂ percentage, with NOx added separately and any qualifying relief then deducted. Commercial vehicles and motorcycles use different category rules.
Is this VRT calculator exact?
No. It is an estimate. Revenue calculates the final VRT when the vehicle is presented for registration and the exact vehicle details, OMSP, CO₂, NOx and any extras are confirmed.
What is OMSP for VRT?
OMSP means Open Market Selling Price. It is Revenue’s view of the Irish market value of the vehicle for VRT purposes and may differ from the invoice or purchase price.
How is VRT calculated on a car?
For Category A cars, the estimate uses the relevant CO₂ rate band multiplied by OMSP, then adds the NOx charge. Electric vehicle relief may reduce the CO₂ component where the vehicle qualifies.
What is the NOx charge?
The NOx charge is a VRT component for Category A vehicles excluding full electrics. It is based on nitrogen oxide emissions and is added to the CO₂ component.
What if I do not have a NOx figure?
If satisfactory NOx evidence is not available, a maximum charge can apply. This calculator uses the diesel or non-diesel maximum estimate when you select that the NOx figure is missing.
Do electric cars pay VRT in Ireland in 2026?
They can. Qualifying battery electric Category A and B vehicles registered by 31 December 2026 can receive relief of up to €5,000. Relief reduces above €40,000 OMSP and is removed at €50,000 or above.
Can I calculate VRT by registration number here?
No. A registration number alone is not a complete VRT calculation input. Irish Calculators uses manual OMSP, CO₂ and NOx values; Revenue’s official service accepts a statistical code or the exact vehicle details needed for its model lookup.
Is VRT the same as motor tax?
No. VRT is linked to registering the vehicle. Motor tax is the recurring road tax paid after the vehicle is registered and used on Irish roads.
Do I also pay VAT or customs duty when importing a car?
Sometimes. VAT and customs duty depend on the vehicle age, mileage, origin, Northern Ireland/UK/EU position, and import facts. This calculator focuses on VRT and should not be treated as a full import-cost calculator.
