Loans & Savings Ireland guides
Start with the guide closest to your question, then use the related calculator when you need numbers.
Choose the guide that matches the decision
Borrowing and saving questions use similar language but need different comparisons. A monthly loan payment tells you about cash flow; it does not tell you the full borrowing cost. A savings rate tells you about potential interest; it does not tell you what remains after tax, whether you can access the money, or whether the rate applies to the full balance.
| Your question | Best guide | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| What would this loan cost each month? | Personal Loan Repayments | Amount, rate, term, frequency and fees. |
| Which of two loan offers is cheaper? | APR and Total Cost of Credit | Same-term APR, total cost and conditions. |
| Should I stretch the loan over longer? | Loan Term vs Monthly Repayment | Monthly relief versus extra lifetime interest. |
| How much must I save by a deadline? | Savings Goal Planning | Target gap, monthly contribution, AER and tax. |
| What are the new State Savings rates? | Ireland State Savings | Issue date, term, total return, AER and access. |
| State Savings or a bank account? | State Savings vs Bank Savings | Tax-free AER versus after-DIRT return over the same term. |
| How do Prize Bonds work? | Prize Bonds Ireland | Chance-based prizes, fund rate and no guaranteed personal return. |
| How is savings interest taxed? | DIRT and Savings Interest | Gross interest, 33% DIRT and exceptions. |
| How large should my rainy-day fund be? | Emergency Fund Ireland | Essential costs, income risk and access. |
| Should extra cash go to debt or savings? | Save or Repay a Loan | Debt APR, after-tax return and liquidity. |
The borrowing checklist: five figures, not one
| Figure | Question it answers | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly repayment | Does the payment fit the budget? | A long term can make an expensive loan look affordable. |
| Interest rate | What rate is applied to the balance? | Mandatory fees may sit outside the stated rate. |
| APR | How do same-amount, same-term offers compare? | APR should not be used alone for different terms. |
| Cost of credit | How much above the amount borrowed will be repaid? | It does not show the monthly cash-flow pressure. |
| Total repayable | What is the full scheduled repayment? | Variable-rate changes or future charges can alter it. |
CCPC guidance says APR is useful for loans of the same amount and term. If terms differ, compare the cost of credit and total repayment as well. Always read the lender's regulated documents before accepting an offer.
The savings checklist: return, access, tax and protection
The Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme generally covers eligible deposits up to €100,000 per person per credit institution. Accounts held under different brands can share the same banking licence, so check the institution rather than counting brand names.
Use estimates in the right order
- Use the calculator to create a transparent baseline.
- Stress-test a less favourable rate, missed saving month or unexpected bill.
- Compare the provider's APR or AER and all conditions.
- Confirm tax treatment and deposit protection from official sources.
- Keep the final agreement, statements and calculations used in the decision.
This workflow prevents a precise-looking calculator result from being mistaken for approval, a guaranteed return or personalised financial advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between APR and AER?
APR is used to compare the annual cost of borrowing and includes relevant loan costs. AER shows an annualised savings return where interest compounds. APR is a borrowing measure; AER is a savings measure.
Is the lowest monthly loan payment the cheapest loan?
Not necessarily. A longer term may lower the monthly payment while increasing the cost of credit and total repayable.
Is the highest savings rate always the best account?
Not necessarily. Check access, balance tiers, monthly limits, the period for which the rate applies, DIRT and deposit protection.
Are savings in Ireland protected?
Eligible deposits at participating institutions are generally protected up to €100,000 per person per credit institution under the applicable deposit-guarantee rules.
Does a calculator guarantee a loan rate or savings return?
No. A loan rate depends on the offer and credit assessment. Savings rates and conditions can change. Use the provider documents as the final source.
Should I clear debt before saving?
High-cost debt can cost more than savings earn, but keeping an accessible emergency buffer can reduce the risk of borrowing again. Compare both rather than applying one rule automatically.
