How this VAT estimate is calculated
VAT is estimated from the amount entered, the selected VAT rate, and whether the amount is VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive.
Published by Irish Calculators. Rates, rules and assumptions are maintained against the official sources linked below.
- The calculator reads the amount and selected Irish VAT rate.
- If the amount is excluding VAT, VAT is added to produce the gross total.
- If the amount is including VAT, VAT is extracted from the gross total.
- The net amount, VAT amount, and gross amount are shown in the breakdown.

About This VAT Calculator
This Ireland VAT calculator helps you add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a gross amount using the current Irish VAT rates. It is designed for quick estimates only and does not determine the correct VAT treatment of your supply.
Current Irish VAT rates. Revenue currently lists a standard rate of 23%, a reduced rate of 13.5%, a second reduced rate of 9%, a livestock rate of 4.8%, and a zero rate. This calculator includes the common Irish rates used for quick planning and also lets you test a custom rate where needed.
VAT rate selection matters. Most goods and services are taxed at the standard rate, while some categories qualify for reduced, second reduced, zero, or exempt treatment. This tool does not classify your product or service for you, so you should confirm the correct rate with Revenue guidance or your accountant before relying on a final figure.
Zero-rated is not the same as exempt. A zero-rated supply is still a taxable supply at 0%, while exempt activities follow different rules and are not handled by this calculator. Before using 0% as the rate, read the zero-rated vs exempt VAT guide if you are unsure whether the supply is zero-rated, exempt, outside scope or not VAT registered.
This calculator is for estimation and planning only. It does not replace Revenue guidance, bookkeeping advice, or a professional VAT review for your specific transaction.
Add VAT, Remove VAT and Net-of-VAT Formulas
Adding VAT starts with a net price. Removing VAT starts with a gross, VAT-inclusive price. These are inverse calculations, so they do not use the same percentage step.
Net price to gross price
Gross = Net × (1 + VAT rate)
At 23%: €100 × 1.23 = €123.
Gross price to net-of-VAT price
Net = Gross ÷ (1 + VAT rate)
At 23%: €123 ÷ 1.23 = €100.
Find the VAT portion
VAT = Gross − Net
At 23%: €123 − €100 = €23.
| Irish VAT rate | Add VAT to €100 net | Remove VAT from gross | VAT amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23% | €100 → €123.00 | €123 ÷ 1.23 = €100 | €23.00 |
| 13.5% | €100 → €113.50 | €113.50 ÷ 1.135 = €100 | €13.50 |
| 9% | €100 → €109.00 | €109 ÷ 1.09 = €100 | €9.00 |
