Universal and income-assessed subsidies
The universal subsidy is available without an income assessment for eligible children and uses the minimum hourly rate. An income-assessed subsidy uses adjusted reckonable family income and the child’s age or school stage to set the hourly rate.
Compare weekly support rather than hourly rates alone. A standard-hours income-assessed award may use only 20 hours, while universal support can potentially use up to 45 eligible hours.
2026 income limits and Multiple Child Discount
| Period | Lower threshold | Upper threshold | Two children | Three or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan–30 Aug 2026 | €26,000 | €60,000 | €4,300 | €8,600 |
| From 31 Aug 2026 | €34,000 | €68,000 | €5,500 | €11,000 |
The Multiple Child Discount is deducted from net family income before the thresholds and taper are applied. It is not a payment to the household.
Maximum income-assessed hourly rates
| Age or education category | Maximum rate |
|---|---|
| Older than 24 weeks and under 12 months | €5.10 |
| 12–35 months | €4.35 |
| Older than 35 months, not at school and not older than six | €3.95 |
| Enrolled at school, or older than six and under 15 | €3.75 |
The child must be older than 24 weeks and under 15. A child under six who has started school uses the school-age rate.
Standard hours, enhanced hours, ECCE and school
Income-assessed enhanced hours can be available where all relevant parents or guardians meet the work, study or training condition. Otherwise standard hours can apply. Universal support has its own maximum of 45 eligible hours.
ECCE or school attendance does not automatically reduce the award maximum, but the same attendance time cannot be funded twice. When budgeting, separate paid childcare outside school or ECCE attendance.
How to apply and use a CHICK
- Review current eligibility and estimate your subsidy using the official NCS service.
- Prepare the identity, child and income information requested for your application.
- Apply or renew online through the NCS portal.
- When approved, give the CHICK to a participating childcare provider.
- Confirm the provider’s registered claim in the NCS portal, checking dates and hours, before relying on the subsidy in a household budget.
The provider must be Tusla-registered and hold an NCS contract.
Using the calculator safely
The Irish Calculators tool is independent and does not decide eligibility. It estimates one selected child at a time and expects annual family income prepared under NCS rules before the Multiple Child Discount. The calculator deducts that discount itself.
Run a separate estimate for each child, keep the full number of children under 15 for the Multiple Child Discount, and confirm the result through the official application.
Worked family example: income to weekly childcare bill
This illustrative budget uses 10 October 2026, two children under 15 and enhanced hours. Both parents meet the work, study or training condition. One child is two, born 1 June 2024; the other is eight, born 1 June 2018 and attending school. The assumed annual income and eligible deductions are:
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Combined countable family income after tax, PRSI and USC, including Child Benefit | €61,500 |
| Less qualifying private pension contributions not already deducted | −€3,000 |
| Less allowable maintenance paid | −€2,000 |
| Income to enter in this calculator, before Multiple Child Discount | €56,500 |
| Calculator deducts the two-child discount | −€5,500 |
| Adjusted income used for the rate calculation | €51,000 |
Do not deduct the Multiple Child Discount yourself from the input. The tool applies it using the total number of children under 15. For each child’s run, enter €56,500 and two children, even if only one needs subsidised care. Never deduct the same pension contribution twice. These deductions are assumed to qualify; use the official income fields and reckonable-income guidance to prepare your own figures. Gross salary is not this input.
Calculate each child separately
€51,000 is halfway between the current €34,000 and €68,000 thresholds. For the two-year-old, the tool estimates €2.14 + (€4.35 − €2.14) × (€68,000 − €51,000) ÷ (€68,000 − €34,000) = €3.245, rounded to €3.25 per hour before multiplying by weekly hours. The school-age calculation uses the €3.75 maximum and gives €2.95 per hour. These are calculator estimates, not confirmed awards.
| Weekly figure | Two-year-old | School-age child |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible childcare hours entered | 45 | 15 |
| Provider fee entered | €225.00 | €90.00 |
| Income-assessed estimate | €3.25 × 45 = €146.25 | €2.95 × 15 = €44.25 |
| Universal comparison | €2.14 × 45 = €96.30 | €2.14 × 15 = €32.10 |
| Estimated parent payment | €225 − €146.25 = €78.75 | €90 − €44.25 = €45.75 |
For this week, total fees are €315, estimated support is €190.50 and the parent pays €124.50. The subsidies are alternatives for each child, not amounts to add together. Support applied to a bill is capped at that bill; an excess is not cash for the parent. Holiday attendance, fees or award dates can change the budget, so do not assume this week repeats all year.
What changes with standard hours?
Keeping the two-year-old’s income, 45 childcare hours and €225 fee, a standard-hours estimate is €3.25 × 20 = €65. Universal support over 45 hours is €96.30, so it produces the lower estimated parent payment of €128.70. Compare the weekly amounts and confirm the appropriate award through NCS.
Try this family in the NCS Calculator, changing the selected child’s date of birth, education stage, hours and fee between runs.
ECCE hours and a CHICK: complete the claim, then check the bill
For a separate preschool example, 40 attendance hours including 15 ECCE hours leave 25 hours outside ECCE. Enter 25 hours, and the provider’s remaining weekly fee after ECCE but before NCS. Do not enter all 40 as NCS hours. This separates actual attendance; it does not permanently reduce a 45-hour enhanced award to 30 hours. In a non-ECCE week, recalculate using actual childcare hours and the award limit.
- Prepare a verified MyGovID, each child’s date of birth and PPSN, and partner and income details where relevant. Use the official application guidance.
- Apply through NCS and check the award’s dates and maximum hours. An estimate does not activate a subsidy.
- Give the approved CHICK, child’s name and date of birth to your participating provider and agree the childcare hours.
- Confirm the provider’s registered claim in the NCS portal. Check dates and hours against your arrangement; ask the provider to correct errors. Registration alone is not enough for payment.
- Check that the provider’s bill deducts the subsidy. Before changing holiday hours, agree and confirm the updated claim. See the NCS claim and holiday-hours FAQs.
Keep the confirmed award, claim details and fee statement together. If a charge differs from the estimate, compare eligible hours, hourly rate, dates and the fee before assuming the calculator’s weekly figure applies.
