VRT on Electric Cars Ireland 2026

Understand 2026 VRT relief for qualifying electric cars in Ireland, the €5,000 maximum, OMSP thresholds and electric motorcycle exemption.

Quick answer

  • Qualifying battery electric Category A and B vehicles registered by 31 December 2026 can receive relief up to €5,000.
  • Revenue applies EV relief automatically at registration where the vehicle qualifies.
  • Relief is strongest up to €40,000 OMSP, reduces between €40,000 and €50,000, and is removed at €50,000 or above.
  • Plug-in hybrids and hybrids are not the same as fully battery electric vehicles for this relief.
  • Series-production electric motorcycles and e-mopeds are exempt from VRT through 31 December 2026.

EV relief table

OMSP position 2026 EV relief treatment Planning note
Up to €40,000 Up to €5,000 relief The relief cannot exceed the VRT otherwise payable
More than €40,000 but less than €50,000 Reduced relief The calculator estimates the taper effect
€50,000 or above No EV relief VRT can still be payable

The current relief applies to qualifying vehicles registered by 31 December 2026. Series-production electric motorcycles are also exempt through that date.

The VRT Calculator Ireland page uses a simplified version of this threshold logic so users can see why the same CO₂ rate may produce different payable VRT after EV relief.

How the €40,000 to €50,000 taper works

For a qualifying battery electric Category A or B vehicle with OMSP above €40,000 but below €50,000, the maximum available relief reduces using the statutory taper:

OMSP Maximum relief before VRT cap Planning meaning
€40,000 €5,000 Relief is still limited to the VRT otherwise payable
€42,000 €4,000 €1,000 taper reduction
€45,000 €2,500 Half of the headline maximum remains
€49,000 €500 Only limited relief remains
€50,000 €0 No EV relief

Worked electric-car VRT examples

Example Base Category A VRT Relief Estimated payable
€30,000 OMSP, 0g/km 7% = €2,100 €2,100 €0
€40,000 OMSP, 0g/km 7% = €2,800 €2,800 €0
€45,000 OMSP, 0g/km 7% = €3,150 €2,500 €650
€50,000 OMSP, 0g/km 7% = €3,500 €0 €3,500

These examples assume the vehicle is a qualifying battery electric vehicle registered by the current deadline and that Revenue accepts the stated OMSP.

Battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid

Power type 2026 EV relief on this page NOx position
Battery electric Can qualify where powered only by an electric motor and registered before the deadline Excluded from NOx
Hybrid Not treated as fully battery electric for this relief NOx can apply
Plug-in hybrid Not treated as fully battery electric for this relief NOx can apply
Series-production electric motorcycle Exempt through 31 December 2026 Category M route

Do not select “battery electric” in the calculator for a hybrid merely because it can drive using an electric motor. The Revenue relief described here requires exclusive electric power.

EVs still need careful import checks

VRT relief does not remove every import cost. You may still need to check VAT, customs position, warranty, charging compatibility, battery condition, insurance, transport and NCTS registration timing.

  • Check whether the vehicle is new for VAT purposes: less than six months old or 6,000km or less can matter.
  • For Great Britain, check import VAT and customs formalities before purchase.
  • For Northern Ireland, obtain proof supporting the vehicle’s NI status and history.
  • Verify charging connector, battery-health information and manufacturer warranty coverage in Ireland.
  • Compare the result again at a higher OMSP because the final Revenue value controls the relief band.

Registration timing and automatic application

Revenue states that qualifying electric-vehicle relief is applied automatically at the point of registration in an NCTS centre or through ROS; no separate relief application is required. Eligibility still depends on the vehicle and the registration deadline.

Current deadline:

The published relief for qualifying Category A and B battery electric vehicles, and the exemption for series-production electric motorcycles, runs to 31 December 2026. Recheck Revenue if registration will occur after that date.

Frequently asked questions

Do electric cars pay VRT in Ireland in 2026?

They can, but qualifying battery electric Category A and B vehicles registered by 31 December 2026 may receive relief of up to €5,000 depending on OMSP and the VRT otherwise payable.

Do electric cars imported from Northern Ireland pay VRT?

Usually yes: Northern Ireland purchase status does not by itself remove VRT. A qualifying battery electric vehicle may receive the 2026 EV relief, while separate evidence determines whether customs duty and import VAT are also due.

Is the EV relief automatic?

Revenue says qualifying reliefs are applied automatically at registration.

How much relief applies at €45,000 OMSP?

The maximum under the taper is €2,500, but the actual relief cannot exceed the VRT otherwise payable.

Do plug-in hybrids get this battery-electric relief?

No. The published relief requires a vehicle powered only by an electric motor.

Does the €5,000 relief mean every EV has zero VRT?

No. The relief is capped by the VRT otherwise payable, tapers above €40,000 OMSP and is removed at €50,000 or above.

Are electric motorcycles exempt in 2026?

Revenue states that series-production electric motorcycles are exempt from VRT through 31 December 2026.
