How this overtime estimate is calculated

Published by Irish Calculators. Rates, rules and assumptions are maintained against the official sources linked below.
- Optional unpaid-break time is deducted from the overtime hours entered.
- The normal hourly rate is multiplied by the selected overtime multiplier.
- The effective overtime rate is multiplied by the remaining payable hours.
- The result is gross overtime pay before PAYE, USC, PRSI and other deductions.

How overtime pay works in Ireland
This calculator estimates gross overtime pay using the hourly rate, overtime hours, multiplier, and optional unpaid-break deduction you enter. It is a planning tool only and does not decide whether overtime or a particular premium rate is legally owed in your job.
In Ireland, there is no single universal overtime multiplier such as 1.5x or 2.0x for every worker. WRC guidance says written employment terms should include conditions relating to hours of work, including overtime. A workplace policy, collective agreement, Employment Regulation Order or Sectoral Employment Order may also affect the applicable rate.
Where Sunday compensation is not already included in the normal rate, WRC guidance says it can be an allowance, increased pay, paid time off or a combination. Because arrangements vary, use this calculator to model gross pay and compare it with your contract, roster and payslip.
Overtime pay calculation examples
Gross overtime pay equals the normal hourly rate multiplied by the workplace overtime multiplier and the payable extra hours. The multipliers below are examples, not universal statutory Irish rates.
Check the multiplier and payable hours against your written terms, workplace policy, collective agreement or any sectoral rule that applies to the job.
